Thoughts on Aspiration

At school, I sometimes see people wearing masks. There were situations I observed where they treated peers who were perceived not good enough or lacking, to be deemed unworthy to learn and appreciate better from. And they become someone else when they become overly influenced by a visual trend or some other movement. It was almost painful for me to witness a young artist that you looked up too for a while only to be ripped off by a fellow student who tries to imitate your idol. In a way I felt those kind of students sort of let their own identity to fall into a trend without really exploring the 'boundaries' of their passion. When I draw, my own purpose is to communicate a message. And learn from that message. Its those kind of learning moments that will really enrich you as a young artist. I am a very accepting person when comes to all styles of art and it is good to seek inspiration into an artist or talent. But there has to be balance between both selflessness and ambition when doing this. Too many times I saw people whose only intention was to impress people, and for that their work suffered. It fell into a cycle that doesn’t produce anything new or even meaningful way of telling a visual story.

  1. Well said. Figured these kinds of things were pretty inevitable within the student community...

  2. Absolutely true. I realise people's objective is to impress people including potiential clients, not to please themselves. They don't realise they will suffer if they continue to impress people.
